The reservoir attracts 53 species of water avifauna of which 19 are winter migrants from Eurasia. During winters 90% of the water avifauna population comprises of the following 11 migratory species; Brahminy Duck, Red Crested Pochard, Pintail, Gadwall, Mallard, Common Pochard, Coot, Common Teal, Wigeon, Tufted Duck and Shoveller.

Salim Ali bird Sanctuary

The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is also known as the Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary. Situated in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, this bird sanctuary houses an estimated 300 species of birds. The sanctuary is open throughout the year, however the months of Nov to June is the best time to visit this sanctuary since it is the time of arrival for migratory birds from the north.

Nalsarovar bird Sanctuary

The Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary boasts of being the largest wetland bird sanctuary in Gujarat. It is also one of the largest in India. Located at a distance of about 64 Km from Ahmedabad, this bird sanctuary includes a large lake with an area of about 123 Sq Km. With the onset of autumn in India, a large number of birds start coming to Nalsarovar Sanctuary whose sojourn lasts throughout the winter and the spring season.

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

Travelling to Ranganthittu for bird watching can be an exhilarating experience for you. Close to Mysore city and neighbour to the Vrindavan gardens, Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary is situated on the banks of the Kaveri River. The six isolated islets present in this sanctuary become the favourite spot for any migratory birds that flock here.

During monsoon season the increase in aquatic insect also attracts birds in this sanctuary. Ranganathittu is a happy breeding ground for many migratory birds like Spoonbills, Open Bill Storks, Darters, White Ibis, Little Cormorants, Egret, Heron, Partridge, River Tern, Stone Plougher, Snake bird, and other exotic bird species. There are several local inhabitants like peacocks and kingfishers.
