Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of medical problems caused by the excessive weight, from back and neck pain and skin irritation to skeletal deformities and breathing problems. And unusually large breasts can make a woman breast-feeding feel extremely self-conscious. Breast reduction, technically known as reduction mammaplasty, is designed for such women. The procedure of a breast reduction is straight forward. The surgeon makes an incision that runs from the areola (the area around the nipple) down to the inframammary fold (the fold of skin where the breast meets the chest) to remove excess fat and tissue. Breast reduction surgery provides many benefits to the women who chose to have the procedure done. Through consultations with your plastic surgeon, you can decide what you would like to gain from the reduction surgery. Each surgery includes a breast lift to eliminate excess skin and repositioning of the areolas and nipples. Another cause of male breast ptosis is a sudden loss of weight. Most men have breast reduction surgery in order to get rid of the excess fat that causes man boobs, but in many cases men who lose a lot of weight in a short period of time will suffer the opposite. The excess flesh sags off your chest with nowhere to go. This can also be the case with a sudden loss or inactivity of muscle. While your doctor may feel that you are a perfect candidate for breast reduction, only you can decide if you are truly ready for the procedure. Cosmetic surgery requires a significant investment of time, money and effort, which is why you need to be sure that you have both the emotional and financial resources to have a successful breast reduction. The closure process includes suturing areas of the inner tissue in order to maintain the shaping - in a sense to create the new shape and lift. Standard sutures or surgical adhesives are used to close the incisions on the outer skin. Out of one's sight, half of the breast scar lies along the lower breast crease. The visible remainder runs around the nipple and then vertically down to meet the lower breast fold. While I have performed very few breast scar revisions, patients need to have a good appreciation of the scarring to be certain that this is an acceptable trade-off. Breast size is an obvious important criteria. There is no precise breast size that makes the cut-off for insurance coverage. Rather it is a combination of your height, weight, and breast size. Technically, your height and weight are put into a formula to create your BSA. (body surface area) Based on your calculated BSA and the amount of breast tissue your plastic surgeon says will be removed (there is an industry standard graph and table which determines this) is the numerical determinant for medical eligibility. Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, in order to allow women - and increasingly, men - to have smaller and better proportioned breasts also has a variety of techniques. The major advances in recent years have resulted in nipple sensitivity being maintained along with the ability to lactate, both of which were problematic just a few years ago.
