Buying And Brewing The Best Coffee

By: John Rose Home | Food-and-Drink | Coffee

If you are looking for the best coffee you could go to a specialty coffee shop and order a cup that will be made on the spot and sit down and drink it right there. These coffee shops have very high quality commercial coffee makers that are also very expensive. These coffee makers whether an espresso maker or a drip coffee maker are meant for heavy commercial use and are also meant to last a while and can be repaired.

Some of these places will also make you a press pot of coffee at your request which is also another type of coffee maker that produces a cup of the best coffee. While you probably won’t invest in a large commercial coffee maker at home you can purchase a commercial type machine intended for home use. But if you just want to make a simple cup of good coffee you too can purchase a press pot sometimes called a French press.

A press pot is the type of coffee maker where you bring your water up to an ideal temperature which for coffee is somewhere in the area of 195 -208 degrees Fahrenheit. If you get the water to boiling just let it sit a moment to let it come down from the 212 boiling point. If your coffee water is too hot it will over extract the oils and other flavors from your coffee grounds and you will not get the best cup of coffee you have ever made at home.

When you use a press pot you have the control as to how long the beans spend brewing in the hot water. Generally in a press pot you will let the coffee grounds brew for 2-3 minutes. If you have chosen a press pot that is insulated it should not lose much water heat in this time. Then you press the plunger down onto the grounds which get the used grounds out of your coffee. There will be a bit of coffee ground residue left however, generally visible at the last pouring. Then pour your coffee into your cup and sit and drink a very fine cup of coffee, perhaps the best coffee made at home.

There are other factors in making good coffee. One of them is to make sure the coffee maker is absolutely clean. Leftover coffee residue and oils are bitter and nasty tasting. Also you should make sure the coffee beans are as freshly roasted as you can get. The closer to the coffee bean roasting time the better the resulting cup of coffee will be. Coffee beans will generally peak in flavor after two days and will hold quality ideally for about two weeks. After that they do begin to deteriorate a lot more. So for a great cup of coffee at home you should only purchase small amounts of freshly roasted coffee at any time. Since there are so many choices of coffee beans available you pretty much can design a custom blend just for you.
