Certain genetic mutations have been found to prolong the lifespan of a number of species in the lab such as worms, fruit flies and mice. These factors appear to play the same role in humans. Professor Lynn Benson, director of The Institute Of Healthy Aging at California State University of Northridge, said such research could help treat, delay, or even prevent many diseases simultaneously with medication. She believes these scientific advances are offering hope to improve the aging process of village assisted living residents. This study will hopefully trigger a new wave in aging research. As far as science is concerned, pathways in the human body along which nutrients pass have proved to have the most robust effect on a healthy lifespan. Professor Benson will be conducting public lectures at various universities and village assisted living centers to inform and educate people about aging. Professor Benson feels that tackling the very causes of aging rather than treating the symptoms individually, offer the best prospects for dealing with the diseases that village assisted living residents face. According to Benson, research on the diseases that are associated with aging is generally done by separate communities of research workers who read different journals, attend different conferences and generally do not communicate with each other. By sharing information and research on diseases associated with aging we can learn more and help improve the conditions of village assisted living residents. By attacking the causes of aging itself, science could treat, or at least delay, a broad spectrum of conditions simultaneously and much more effectively. Benson said that in mammals, insulin is the regulating factor in blood sugar levels and metabolism in response to food intake, while the related insulin-like growth factor regulates growth. Village assisted living communities are very interested in learning about the latest research on aging to help improve the conditions of their residents. Professor Benson said this research means a brand new approach to the treatment of age-related degenerative conditions. She added, "The major burden of ill health is in the older section of the population. "The new discoveries about aging have raised the prospect of increasing the number of years that people enjoy in good health, with broad-spectrum preventive medicines for the diseases of aging." Mutations in genes that program the protein components of the insulin, signaling pathways have proved to extend lifespan in a nematode worm, the fruit fly and mice. Genetic variants for these genes in humans have proved to be associated with increasing lifespan. Controlled dietary restriction, which is a simple environmental intervention, can also extend life in a wide range of animal species. Drugs which slow down the nutrient pathways in humans could imitate the effects of dietary restriction and act not only to increase a healthy lifespan but to effectively target a broad range of aging related diseases. Some of the age related diseases that village assisted living residents face include cardiovascular disease, a variety of cancers, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.
