Can Self Help Treatment Work For Anxiety Disorders And Panic Attacks

By: Peter English Home | Health-and-Fitness

I know that when I first started suffering from anxiety disorders and panic attacks, it seemed impossible that any kind of panic disorder treatment could do anything to help me to overcome anxiety disorders and panic attacks. My panic attacks left me feeling either, that I was in the process of having some kind of seizure or that I was going out of my mind.

My first panic attack involved most of the major symptoms. My heart seemed to be trying to jump out of my chest and developed a rather irregular fluttering rhythm, I got the shakes and started feeling dizzy and it left me with a rather weird out of body feeling for an hour or two afterwards. I now know that this is all perfectly normal for someone who is experiencing a panic attack. Like everybody else who has ever had one, I went to the doctor worried that there was something seriously wrong with me, only to discover that I was physically normal and healthy but suffering from a panic disorder.

Over the years I have tried everything from tranquillisers and beta blockers to counselling and CBT to help me to overcome anxiety and panic disorders. Each seemed to help a little at the time but then something new would crop up in my life and I would find myself back having panic attacks and anxiety again.

In the end I decided to try a self help panic disorder treatment. There are several on the market place and I really had nothing to lose.

The thinking behind them is quite simple. You are the best person to treat your own panic disorder, simply because you are there whenever it happens. All that you need to know is how to talk to yourself and how to deal with the feelings that you experience.

Most of the self help anxiety programs start by educating you about panic and anxiety so that you are approaching the subject differently.

It helps to take the fear of panic away so that you no longer worry about your next attack. Once you have overcome the fear, the panic fades way into insignificance.

It sounds simple and the basic principle is simple, but that doesn't always make it easy. Don't be fooled into thinking that Self Help Panic Disorder treatment is a soft option, you still need to work at it and it does take time but finally I found something that seemed to treat the problem and not just hide the symptoms.

One or two words of caution though. There are now several self help programs around and not all of them are equal. Make sure that whichever one you choose has a proven track record and deals with the type of panic or anxiety disorder that you have.
