Can You Do Your Own Electrical Circuit Repair?

By: Avner Leibovitch Home | Home-and-Family

Doing an electrical circuit repair is pretty basic. However, you should first learn at least the basics of electrical circuits. You also have to take certain basic precautions in order to do the electrical circuit repair safely. You should never attempt to do more complex work than you are qualified to do. When faced with a more complicated electrical circuit repair, you should hire a professional.

Turn Off the Electricity

Before touching anything during an electrical circuit repair, make sure that the electricity is turned off. Turn off the circuit breaker and double check it by testing whether appliances will work when switched on. It is even better if you have a test lamp with you to accurately test if outlets still have power. It is quite cheap to purchase a test lamp, so buying one should not be a problem. It is an important safety device when doing any type of electrical circuit repair. It is also easy to use. You simply plug it in the outlet. If it lights up, there is obviously still some power there. If it does not, then the power is completely turned off.

Prepare Your Tools

You should also make sure you have all of your tools ready before starting any electrical circuit repair. It is also helpful to write down the steps you need to take, especially if it is your first time doing a certain type of electrical circuit repair. This will not only help you save time, but also ensure you will be able to do the electrical circuit repair properly and safely.

Basic Electrical Circuit Repair and Troubleshooting

If you have a fuse blowing up frequently, this can indicate you are overloading the circuit. This is often a problem in older homes. The electrical wiring might not be designed to service numerous appliances. There is usually one heavy duty appliance that will trip the circuit whenever other appliances run simultaneously. To pinpoint which appliance it is, simply turn on your appliances one by one until you blow the fuse.

If this is not the problem, then turn off the circuit and unplug everything. If the circuit breaks when you turn it back on, the problem could be in the wiring or other components. At this point, if you are not an expert, you should stop doing the electrical circuit repair. You may mess up your wiring and end up with more severe damage. What you should do instead is call a professional electrician to help you.

But then, if you have all of the necessary basic knowledge and you have experience on these things, you can continue doing the electrical circuit repair. Turn off the power again and look for loose wires and screws. If you need to do some replacement, do them while the power is off. After that, try testing the circuit. If the problem still persists, there might be another problem in the circuit. That is the time to bring in the professionals. To prevent any further damage, it is best that the electrical circuit repair is done by a licensed electrician. Even if you have to spend a bit, it is worth it. Not only will your electrical problem be solved, your home will be safer as well.
