Can You Get Recovered Data From Wet Hard Drives?

By: Michiel Van Kets Home | Computers-and-Technology | Hardware

Most of us are aware of the fact that it is not recommended to have water and your hard drive connect with each other. The protective hard casing of your hard drive is not designed to withstand contact or immersion in water and any contact involving water, in almost all cases, will result in major problems with the operation of your hard drive.

Sometimes however the event is not of our making and therefore we are left with a hard drive that effectively has been swimming. Examples of this are weather conditions such as hurricanes or floods that are out of our control. The last thing you would, and should be thinking about in an emergency situation is retrieval or care of your hard drive and this is where hard disk data recovery experts often come in to your life in assisting you in getting your valuable data back.

In the beginning the water will initially affect the electronics and in most cases attempting to start your computer hard drive will force the electrical current to travel to places within the computer that it should not always be going to. In many cases you will actually find there is even a little burst of smoke to let you know that the problems with water ingress are in fact real.

While it would seem a reasonable option to attempt to dry out the disk over time and perhaps with a little aided ventilation this is also not going to offer you many benefits. When the water has made it to the HDA (Head Disk Assembly) this is often the last days for the disk drive and more and often varied problems will continue to arise. One of the reasons for this is that the water that has caused the damage is not purely just water and will often have a variety of contaminants all of which will "dry" themselves to your hard drive.

The drive heads work on air flow over a smooth dry and shiny surface and rough, dirt covered or moisture laden surfaces, however minimal, will eventually result in contact between the heads and the platter. Bearing in mind that this platter could be rotating at 10,000 rpm it is not difficult to assume that damage will occur.

If you attempt to dry out a your hard drive and then try to run the drive believing that the water has in fact dissipated you will often find that even if you are successful in starting the hard drive there will be internal and continual damage taking place on the drive, that is perhaps initially undetected. This continual damage may eventually lead to the point that it is not possible to recover any data at all from the drive. Therefore, consult the experts from the beginning and do not try to attempt a "dry out" on your own.

The restoration of data from a water damaged hard drive is a job for the professionals and a great deal of care must be taken. One of the most important considerations with water damaged drives is the importance of whether the data on the disk is actually required. If this information can be located in a backup system or the information is not actually needed you can avoid a lot of unnecessary time and cost in not bothering to attempt to recover the data. This point needs careful consideration before attempting the processes of the data recovery.

That considered and when you have made the decision that the data is required to be recovered, take the hard drive to the hard drive data recovery experts and let them get started. The initial work will involve the entire assembly being thoroughly cleaned as data recovery experts know that any remaining residue is not acceptable and will only lead to further problems.

In most cases the heads will require replacement as cleaning heads is seen as a last resort only and is not considered unless there are no replacement parts available to complete the job this way. It is also common that the results of the water and the debris within the water itself will cause problems with the spindle bearings as well as the drive platter. This generally will mean that the platter itself will no longer rotate. This is a major problem as this will mean that the platter, if it is no longer rotating, will have to be transferred to a new working housing.

In the case of a single platter this is not too much of an inconvenience however in the case of multi-platter disks this can become a major issue due to the increased risk of incorrect alignment between the platters. If there is not precision alignment between the platters this can often mean the difference between possible retrieval or the total loss of any data.

What do you need to take away from this article and ensure that you remember for any possible future instances where your hard drive is likely to have an exposure to water? Never switch your computer on after water damage has occurred, box it up and take the unit to a hard drive data recovery specialist and have them check the damage and take the necessary steps to retrieve your data. Just because it looks dry and that it might work does not mean that turning it on is the answer. If you are interested in the opportunity to get data recovered get straight to the experts †that's what they are there for.
