Getting caught speeding can be a damper on your driving confidence as well as a long-term mark on your license. Not only this, but speeding fines and tickets can easily ramp up and cost a small fortune. In many countries, items used to avoid police speed recorders (such as speed traps/cameras) are legal, but they are also illegal in a number of other countries and states. Therefore, it's important you investigate whether the location you live in allows use of such devices, as breaking the law is an extremely bad idea. For those where it's legal, you should consider car radar detectors. They're brilliant devices to block radar-based speed scanners from tracking your speed. They come with many intuitive features to help you avoid those speed traps and save yourself a fine. Radar Detectors A cheap detector will warn you of a scanner, but leave it too late, not warn you thoroughly enough or simply not cover enough devices to provide decent protection. As such, it's important you buy a high-quality detector and through its warnings, it'll easy pay back through avoiding tickets. It's also of note that these detectors do as their name implies; detect. They do not block scanners, so you'll need to slow down or avoid the camera in order for it to be effective. Good radar detectors will provide you with ten miles worth of range. This is a very good range and will provide you with plenty of time to slow down or change your route. Additionally, many of the higher-tier detectors can also spot 'over-the-hill' and hidden scanners, making them invaluable for such areas. A point to consider is that low-quality detectors often report back false positives caused by noise. Upper-tier detectors have higher sensitivity and better hardware to prevent such false positive and filter out the false noise. This will mean you spend less time ignoring the detector and more time paying attention to its invaluable warnings. Following on, the warning systems should also be of decent quality. A simple blinking light or LED screen isn't likely to get your attention while driving and the last thing you want to be doing is staring at it while driving. Good systems will provide voice alerts to warn you of oncoming speed traps and scanners. The installation should be easy and provide all the necessary equipment such as suction cups or clamps. Furthermore, having the latest software for the newest police equipment would be something of outstanding use.
