They might get insights into the disorders by talking with parents and relatives of the concerned individual, apart from observing and talking with the patient. Later for diagnostic and treatment purposes, they may require laboratory based diagnostic tests. After the diagnostics is over, they may have to prescribe drugs, shock therapy and even psychotherapy.

Often, a psychiatrist gets connected with other fields (mostly psychologists) while providing the desired treatment. Due to the scope of work, there might be cases wherein the working hours are extended. Psychiatrists may also have to rush at odd hours, just in case the situation arises.

With the health based industry growing, the scope of psychiatrists has extended boundaries. Psychiatrists are often required to work in clinics, hospitals, private institutions, public health departments and in the field of psychiatric social work. Career opportunities as a professional psychiatrist are varied ranging from teaching to committing themselves to social work. They might even set up their own practice. After you have a good amount of experience listed on your resume, you can go for research in your area of interest.
