By: Clint Jhonson Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Improvement

You have probably seen them in resorts or eateries †these huge fans attached to the ceiling that go round ensuring that the entire room gets cool. But you might never have thought of getting one installed in your home. Perhaps you assumed that the ceiling fan might be very expensive or extremely difficult to install, but that’s not true. They are priced competitively along with the best of freestanding fans and installing one is as easy as putting in an additional light fitting. Besides, they are even useful in winter to blow down the warm air that rises so you can save some on your heating bills.

Normally the home ceiling fan rotates about thrice every second when you adjust it to the highest speed. To make it turn faster, like the industrial fans, it would require to be made of sharper blades which could pose a threat in your home. Nevertheless, three rotations every second is not really slow and huge fans can actually a lot of difference.

If you are considering buying a ceiling fan, you might consider getting one that is integrated with a light. Since the fan will be occupying quite a bit of space on your ceiling where you would normally have a light fixture, it would be a good idea to have a light as part of it, so your room doesn’t seem dark. And you needn’t be anxious about having to keep the fan on if you need to use just the light, as they come with separate switches.

Another fear that a lot of people have is that the ceiling fans might fall and hurt someone. But if you ponder over it, you’ve never seen a lamp fall down, have you? It is most likely that you haven’t as whatever is fixed to the ceiling has to be so done by adhering to safety standards with mechanisms that are failsafe.

This has been one of man’s greatest inventions. If you live in a place where the climate is warm, you can save some money by buying a ceiling fan. No matter what time of the year it is, it is nice to have the air circulating in your home and in summer, you can use the air conditioner a few degrees lesser and save up to 40% on your electricity bills. Besides you will even recover the cost after one summer or two. It doesn’t bring down the temperature in the room but circulates that air making you feel a minimum of 5 degrees cooler.

You can set your ceiling fan to rotate in various directions. For optimum cooling, the blades should rotate anti-clock-wise. This results in a downdraft from the ceiling. If you are in the process of constructing a new home, make sure your rooms are wired for this; it is better than having to shell out more money to the electrician to do the wiring again later. You can buy ceiling fans to match practically any dcor and there are a lot of beautiful ones available in the market today, whether it is for your bedrooms, kitchen, study or hall. Some people have fans in every room and even outdoors in the workshop or on the deck.

Ceiling fans must be fixed between seven and nine feet above the floor; higher if your have 6 footers in your home. If you have high ceilings you can use extenders which help lower the fan to the desired height. Make sure that it is at least 10 inches away from the ceiling since the blades require air to move around them if they are to provide circulation effectively. Also, the blades should be at least 1.5 feet away from the wall on all sides.
