There are many challenges to doing graphic design work in California. Whether these challenges are technological or social it is irrelevant, the only thing that is important is how it affects one"s ability to get the job done. Primarily there are three things that deeply impact California"s graphic design work "" the near limitless number of designers, the high level of technical knowledge to stay competitive, and the extreme cost of doing business in this area. In order to best understand how each of these things can impact the day to day activities of a graphic design operation in California they must be looked at individually. First up we have the competition of all the different competing agencies. While choice is good for consumers, it can often be difficult for designers to truly stand out. Competition in this area is extremely tough as many different companies will compete for a limited number of jobs. This is the hard part. The good thing is that there are jobs to support the industry. While competition may be tough, once a firm is able to establish themselves they can continue to find work fairly easily. As for designers, as long as they are good at what they do they can find a near limitless line of competitive firms that are willing to hire them. The hard part is not only becoming a good graphic designer in California, but staying at that level. This brings us to the second thing that makes work here a challenge. Technologies used for graphic design are continually evolving and progressing. Staying on top of what technology is the best for each application is a job all onto itself. The tough part is being able to not only master the tools you use, but continually be able to re master them as new features, components, and advancements come out. Just being able to edit in Photoshop is not going to cut it anymore. One needs to have an understanding of how a host of different applications work in the design process. In addition to that, a good understanding of the needed hardware to run these applications is also required. Whether it is computer systems, cameras, or even simply peripherals knowledge of these different components is extremely beneficial to keep yourself fresh and on the cutting edge, thus making yourself desirable to firms around the area. Lastly finding away to overcome the extreme cost of doing business in California is also necessary to keep not only a graphic design company, but a graphic designer, in good working order. Rent, utilities, and other factors are all extremely expensive in and around California. Finding ways to cut costs and maximize extra spending money is a great skill to have when trying to stand out from the sea of competition.
