The Netherlands might be one of Europe's smallest countries, but it is also one of the continent's most active. Budget travelers can experience the best of the country by going to one of its many popular annual festivals. Fun, frantic and packed full of wonderful people from around the world, festivals are often one of the busiest and most sociable times at Amsterdam hostels and city hotels. Holland Festival Far and away the country's biggest cultural festival, this celebration of art, music, theatre and dance is sure to have the host city of Amsterdam buzzing with tourist and local activity. But in order to make one's stay as pleasant and hassle-free as possible, it is advisable to book Amsterdam hostels as close the action as a budget traveler is likely to get for their money. One such venue is appropriately named the Heart of Amsterdam. Located only minutes from the main Dam Square, visitors will have the best of the festivals museum, theatre and music venues within easily accessible reach - and all on a budget to rival the cheapest Amsterdam hostels. Queen's Night and Day Festivals By contrast, the annual celebration of former Queen Juliana's birthday is celebrated nationwide, giving the tourists the pick of the Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam hostels and many more depending on which city's celebrations most take their fancy. On April 30th of every year, local residents take to the streets and take part in a nationwide party with fairgrounds, parades and street markets. Traditional family -orientated fun is the main focus of these day celebrations - but tourists beware, there is unlikely to be a normal shop open as trade becomes unregulated. But if the day's celebrations are too reserved, those heading to the Hague are in for a treat on the preceding evening of April 29th, where music venues and open air concerts host special line ups with free entry. For night-time revelers the Stayokay Den Haag hotel promises to match the competitive prices and level of service at any of the top Amsterdam hostels and is the perfect place to bed down after a long night of dancing. Dunya Festival This Rotterdam-based festival attracts the cream of global talent for a series of open air culture and art shows and exhibitions. Taking place during May, there is also a mini Dunya Festival for children to enjoy, featuring poetry and storytelling. Avoiding Amsterdam hostels altogether, there is plenty of recommended Rotterdam accommodation for budget travelers including the hostel ROOM and the Hostel boat the Clipper.
