Pronab Sen, chief statistician and secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, has urged the Indian government to hold back the withdrawal of stimulus measures provided to India Inc in order to help it emerge from the adverse impact of the recessionary pressures completely. Speaking to reporters in the national capital, Mr Sen, stated, "€śAlthough the government will consider the advance estimates on economic growth before taking a decision to withdraw the stimulus measures, I would like to say that the statistics may not give the real picture of the economic activity."€ť The statement made by the chief statistician has made corporate India, including SMEs, hopeful that the government would take his viewpoint into consideration and extend stimulus measures for another year. "€śContinuation of stimulus measures for another year will prove to be helpful for small businesses as it would help them to combat the negative effects of the global economic slowdown,"€ť said P Mishra, senior analyst at Moneywise, an investment advisory firm and trading house in Kolkata. Mr Sen has further opined that visible signs of demand recovery and surge in industrial growth are mere reflection of improvement in supply of goods. However, he added that this should not be considered as an indication that there is sufficient demand to absorb the supplied commodities.
