With newborn children, parents naturally want to make sure that they are always ok. Therefore, it is not uncommon to see a parent constantly turning around and/or glancing in their rear view mirror to ensure their child's safety. However, this is not always such a good idea to engage in behavior such as this. For the first and more obvious reason, constantly turning your head means that for just a fraction of a second (maybe more), your eyes are not on the roadway. When your eyes are not on the road, this is more than enough time for someone to make an evasive movement in their own car, which has the potential of causing you to get into an accident or even be killed (if you are not careful). As a word of advise, you should never ever take your eyes off the road. If you are worried about your little one, you may have to make trips with another adult in the car who can keep an eye on your child for you so that you are able to focus on driving. A creative way to do this is to plan a shopping date with another stay-at-home mom or dad or even a lunch date. Doing this helps you to spend more time with people outside of your home and it also helps to solidify lasting friendships as well as meet new people (not to mention playmates for your child). Another unexpected perk is the fact that driving with another adult often means that you are taking advantage of all that carpooling has to offer. More importantly, planning on having another adult with you helps you to feel rest assured that there is someone who is constantly glancing back and keeping an eye on the kids so that you can drive. As your children get older, they may become more rambunctious- picking up things that are near to them, putting things in their mouths, throwing things, screaming, kicking, etc. When you put your child in the car, give them a toy that is soft and pliable- something that, if they threw it, it wouldn't knock you out or hurt them somehow. Keep all sharp and otherwise dangerous objects well out of reach. If you have to, pull your vehicle over when it safe to do so so that you can address whatever issue it is your child is having. Do not turn your entire body around to reach under the seat for a toy or to give them your full attention. Why? You are driving! If you are driving, you simply cannot afford to turn around and give your child your full attention as well. Doing so could have deadly consequences. Instead, make sure that you pull your car over If you have to or ride with another adult, as mentioned earlier. We all want our children to be safe as well as be happy; and this is more than achievable as long as we make sure that we are following the rules of the roads first.
