Chin And Cheek Augmentation Change The Underlying Structure Of The Face

By: Dave Stringham Home | Health-and-Fitness

Cheek implants (malar augmentation) and chin implants (mentoplasty) modify the underlying structure of the face to produce a pleasing combination of facial elements. Using components of classic beauty, in this case prominent cheekbones and a strong chin projection, your plastic surgeon will create a countenance of balance and distinction.

The proportioning qualities of these procedures can benefit patients in many ways. Both can enhance a facelift, correct asymmetries and congenital defects, cheek implants can recontour sagging mid-facial tissues, and a chin implant can shorten the perceived length of the nose.

Cheek and chin implants are safe, and risk of patient allergic reactions is very low. Non-toxic materials include solid silicone, porous polyethylene, and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, and all can be custom trimmed by your cosmetic surgeon.

Malar augmentation and mentoplasty each require thirty to sixty minutes to complete, and can be performed with local anesthesia combined with a sedative (with the patient awake). However, your plastic surgeon may recommend general anesthesia (with the patient asleep). For each implant, a small incision is made, usually inside the mouth (for mentoplasty, inside the mouth or underneath the chin); a pocket to receive the implant is surgically formed; a sterilized facial implant of the appropriate size and shape is placed in the pocket and secured; the incision is closed using tiny sutures. External sutures can be removed in five to seven days while intraoral sutures will dissolve in about ten days.

Following the procedures, some discomfort and aching can be expected, and can be controlled with medications prescribed by your board certified plastic surgeon. The swelling and bruising that may occur usually subsides within the first two weeks; during the first twenty-four hours, swelling will occur and it can be minimized by applying cold compresses while keeping your head elevated. After mentoplasty, an elastic dressing will be in place for a few days. For both procedures, instructions for temporary changes in oral hygiene and eating (a soft food diet) will be provided--the ability to move your mouth will be diminished right after the procedure, and chewing may be uncomfortable for a week to ten days.

Though it may be best to avoid smiling immediately after your surgery, it will be difficult not to smile when your recovery is complete. With your facial features in balance, you can emerge with self-confidence and distinction. In order to receive mentoplasty or malar augmentation you must set up a personal consultation with your plastic surgeon.
