Chinese Flute Lessons - An Overview

By: Pamelina Siow Home | Arts-and-Entertainment

The Chinese civilization is considered as one of the oldest civilizations in the world. This would account for the many old instruments that have originated from China. They actually have 15 different kinds of flutes, while the Americans only know of a few kinds. Because most of them are not really well-known, we will discuss only one kind of flute in this article.

The dizi is perhaps the most popular kind of Chinese flute. It is further divided into two types: quid and bangdi. Dizi is made from bamboo, a tree that's very widespread in China. This instrument is played sideways, and it only has six holes for you to play all the important notes. One distinguishing feature of the dizi is its membrane hole. This membrane can be changed to produce different sounds from the flute.

Holding the dizi is, at first, a little difficult. This is because you can only use both hands' pinkies and thumbs to hold it. The other fingers will be used to cover the holes to produce different notes. If you practice it well, the rest becomes easy. Learning to play the dizi is similar as learning to play a regular flute.

Since you're new to Chinese flute lessons, a few tips would definitely help. You should relax whenever you play. Not only will it help in making you play better by controlling your blowing strength, but also avoids headaches that usually come with continuous blowing. In addition, your fingers should accurately cover the correct holes. It shouldn't leave an open hole, since this can compromise your playing or make the wrong note.

The best way to learn is by starting professional chinese flute lessons to guide you from the beginning. Although you may hear people saying they learned to play online, the methods are still different. You may be holding or positioning yourself in an improper manner, and you won't know it. That makes it harder for you to learn.

Before you start Singapore flute lessons on Chinese flutes, be sure to understand this: It requires rigorous and constant practice to master an instrument. Don't ever expect to master the flute within a few weeks. You will need extensive and regular practice to really be good at this. Like all musical instruments around the world, practicing regularly and everyday is the only way to be better. Stop being lazy when it comes to learning and you will benefit from it.

Chinese flutes may not be famous in the US, but it beats out its counterparts. Although some will argue, dizi is considered the best of its kind by many because of its melodic music. Players of dizi don't necessarily have to be Chinese or Asians, because music is for everyone. Limiting oneself to the regional music instrument is kind of putting a limit on the information you're learning. Be open-minded to everything. It's fun and could benefit you in the future.
