Choosing A Fire Pit

By: Daren Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Appliances

Originally, Fire Pits provided early man with a way to contain his fires and keep them from spreading. This was a necessity under primitive conditions, and was used as a survival feature. Now, a Fire Pit can provide a focal point for outdoor gatherings. Set on the patio, the Fire Pit provides an opportunity for relaxation and good fellowship. The Fire Pit also makes a stunning garden feature, and there are different styles and designs for every taste and decorating need.

Today’s Fire Pits have come a long way from their origin as pits dug in the ground. Many portable Fire Pits are available in a variety of styles and prices. There are outdoor fire pits that will burn wood or gas. And while many people prefer the authentic appearance and aroma of a wood fire, the gas option is cleaner and will not produce smoke or sparks.

A freestanding firepit can be purchased for under $200, and generally comes equipped with a domed spark guard. These Fire Pits are not used for cooking (except maybe marshmallows), but they do provide warmth and ambiance.

Another popular theme is the Fire Pit Table. This often elevates the Fire Pit to a convenient height for use as a surface for food or drink. Many Fire Pit Tables are high enough to accommodate chairs being used with them, so that friends can sit around the table and enjoy the outdoors, the flames, and good companionship. Many Fire Pit Tables can be custom designed, to make this outdoor accessory exclusively yours. Fire Pit Tables can be found for under $200, but the more elaborate, or custom models can cost several thousand dollars.

Fire Pits and Fire Pit Tables are available in a variety of materials, the most common being metal such as iron or copper. Other materials used are slate, wood, marble, and glass mosaic over steel.

Besides the pre-made models of Fire Pits, a permanent, installed Fire Pit can also be built to your exact specifications. This Fire Pit will not be moveable, so choose the site for this carefully.

Anyone using a Fire Pit should keep several safety requirements in mind. To begin with, the Fire Pit should be positioned 3 feet from outdoor furniture and 10 feet from the house. Gasoline or kerosene should never be used to ignite the Fire Pit, this can be very dangerous. And finally, a water supply should be available as well.
