Choosing The Best Places To Retire: How To Find The Right Fit For You

By: Sandy Winslow Home | Travel-and-Leisure

When considering the best places to retire, there are new factors making their way into the discussion. Long gone are the days when sunshine and golf were enough to turn the heads of most retirees. These days the best places are wherever retirees can find an outlet for their interests, a place to pursue their passions, and where there are enough activities and amenities to ensure a full, vital and engaging lifestyle. Also important to retirees is proximity to children and grandchildren. The newest generation of grandparents has taken a more active role in the lives of their grandchildren, and it’s important to them to remain nearby and to be a central figure in their grandchildren’s lives.

Retirement today looks very different from the concept of retirement that most people held twenty or thirty years ago, and our vision of today’s retiree is changing as well. People are retiring younger, and often considering second careers. They are more vital, more energetic, and in many cases, healthier and more invested in their social lives and friendships. Choosing a community that highlights their hobbies and interests and one where they feel they are surrounded by like-minded peers is of increasing concern. A welcoming environment for children and grandchildren and plenty of space to host holiday parties and family and friends is high on the list of demands.

With this in mind, developers have changed the way they build and market to retirees. New communities with a staggering list of amenities and options are springing up in markets everywhere from Phoenix to Bangor. Destinations like Florida and Las Vegas are still popular, but most retirees are finding a solution to their retirement dilemma right in their own backyard.

With such a dizzying array of options available, how should you go about choosing the best places to retire? Ask yourself this:

How do I feel about my current community and its climate? Do I have deep ties that bind me here, or would I like to branch out and explore someplace new? In considering communities old and new, it’s important to ask yourself, are there resources available for me in the event that I need additional support, such as life care, or medical care?

What are my interests? Do I want a community where I have a great deal of privacy, or am I looking to forge new relationships and get involved with other residents? How big a role do I want my hobbies to play in my retirement? Is it important that I choose a community with, say, a focus on golf, or are there resources nearby where I can indulge in a round or two?

What size home do I need, and what kind of maintenance am I willing to do? Whom might I entertain in my new home, and will I have the space and resources I require to make this a possibility?

Whatever the answers to your questions, rest assured that in today’s market there is sure to be a perfect option for you. Take your time, share your questions with others, and with a little research and some careful consideration, you’ll find it easier than you think to choose one of the best places to retire for you.
