You've done your homework and you're now considering Christian high schools in Massachusetts for your troubled teen. That can be a wonderful decision. However, you'll want to make the right decision about which school to consider. Here are a few factors to consider. First, although it may not be a pleasant factor to keep on your list, you must consider the cost of the school. We'd all like to take a "price is no object" perspective, but the fact of the matter is that most of us do have financial limitations. A Christian boarding school can be expensive and there's no way to avoid making cost part of the decision calculus. Second, parents will want to carefully consider the nature of the school's Christian teaching. Some of these institutions make religion a key component of every day. Others are almost secular, although they share nominal connection to a specific church. They may have very little religious education or directions on a day to day basis. Parents will want to select an option that appeals to their feelings on those issues. Furthermore, many parents will want to think about the nature of the religious perspective and whether or not the likely teachings are sufficiently compatible with their family's outlook. A Southern Baptist family may love the idea of a Christian school as an intervention for a troubled teen, but they may be uncomfortable if the school under consideration is Catholic and makes a point of teaching religious lessons from a Catholic perspective. Third, parents must thoroughly investigate the Christian boarding school under consideration. While most of these institutions are wonderful and offer tremendous promise for troubled teens, there are occasional rotten apples in the barrel. One doesn't want to accidentally send a child into a destructive or otherwise inappropriate environment simply because he or she failed to do a thorough job of research. One benefit of a Christian school is that your child is raised among fellow believers. As the old adage goes, "bad company corrupts good character." By sending your children to a Christian school, you are likely to see that your child's friends are the some of the best people that your child could be around. If you're child grows up around other believing children, it is far less likely that your child will be involved in drugs, sex, underage drinking, or other negative actions. Fourth, it's important to consider the school from multiple perspectives. Working on the troubled teen's problems may be a priority, but the quality of the academic program, the ability to prepare students for college and a host of other considerations should be considered before making a decision about which school is right for one's child. If you're considering a Christian boarding school for your child, you'll want to think about all of these issues before making a decision.
