When something stains or otherwise soils upholstery, maintaining cleanliness can be a real challenge. Upholstered furniture and carpeting may provide a delicate, comfortable texture, but its porous component absorbs any kind of stuff, and it is not easy extract things out. Even smells can be difficult to remove, since particles are confined between the threads, deep below the surface area. Vacuums work great for removing dirt and dust that builts up and which accumulate on top of the upholstery, but that's about all they do - free the dirt off the surface, they don't penetrate deep into the layers of the fabric to remove everything that's lodged into place. This appears as if the upholstery is clean at first look, but marks will never surface , smells will remain, and all the dirt sticks - you just can't see it. One good tip for cleaning upholstery is to get down deep into the layers using an extractor or shampooer. These can be acquired for as little as $100, in the case of Bissell's Little Green Clean Machine, which is a dual tank, heated extractor that comes with cleaning solution. The procedure involves the use of a high temperature liquid cleaning solution which is injected to the upholstery, then it is vacuumed out in the same pass. Coming out with the liquid are the dirt, grime and smell. Once your carpets dries up, you will witness a brand new like bright carpets. If you need to cover more area, you may need to tap a more powerful unit - such as the large red Rug Doctor machines which are offered for rent in supermakets. These are not appropriate for tiny cracks or hole, but for large carpets or rugs, these are the way to go. When applying vacuum, make one pass, then pound the upholstery with the palm of your hand to send more dirt to the surface for the next pass. This is a trick many auto detailers apply every day.
