College Financial Aid For Unemployment Situations

By: Jill Cohen Home | Reference-and-Education | College

With the unemployment rate being so high in states all across the country, there are many programs which provide financial aid to those who are in need. Although you may not be able to find a program that will award you all the money you need to graduate without having to pay anything back, you will be able to get some assistance. There are a lot of colleges and universities that are offering help for the unemployed, and if you are one of them you’ll want to sit down and take all of the time necessary to find what you need. Getting a higher education is not cheap, even at community colleges, which is why finding good financial assistance is crucial.

Recently President Obama announced that those who are unemployed may be eligible to receive the funds necessary to pay for either a college education or training that can help with finding a new job. Even those who are considered to be working at the poverty level can get financial assistance which can really help with getting a higher education as soon as possible. Chances are there are at least a few community colleges within your area that offer financial assistance to the unemployed. You will of course have to provide proof through documentation that you are not working, such as unemployment records.

Those who are currently unemployed can receive Federal grants which can help with at least some of costs associated with going to a college or university. Most financial assistance requires that you take at least 2 or 3 classes consistently. There will be different requirements and stipulations for each grant or loan, so it is important to make sure that you look through all of the details carefully before accepting it. The more you know about the financial assistance you get the better.

FAFSA is one of the most popular methods of getting money from the government if you are unemployed or in a very low income bracket. This Free Application for Federal Student Aid allows a multitude of people across the country to apply for funds from the government. While some are turned down each year, many others are approved. You can either get a loan or a grant from the government, depending on what your own individual situation is like. Even if you get a loan, you will not have to pay it back until you have completed your education.

Filling out a FAFSA form is as easy as going online and entering all of the necessary information. You should be ready with income tax records and all of the financial and person information that is required to complete the application. Once you have filled it out, you can expect to a letter back from the government informing you of what you have been approved for and how much. The amount awarded to students varies because of multiple factors including income and age. It can be a great way to get the money you need for your education, so look at it and find out all you can.
