College Financial Aid Grants: Finding Funds For Your Studies

By: mark ritchie Home | Reference-and-Education | College

For many students who want to study, college financial aid grants are often the only option for funding. Luckily there are plenty of options out there, both private and public. Different grants apply to different individuals, and have different criteria.

As paying for education becomes more expensive, students all over the world are finding themselves in need of college financial aid grants. Luckily, there are numerous sources of such financial aid; all you need to do is look (and qualify).

The first source for such grants is, of course, the government. In most countries, the government will have a body specifically charged with providing financial assistance to highly qualified but underprivileged students. Publicly funded grants usually stipulate certain qualifying conditions that applicants must meet. One key condition is academic achievement, with the most basic criterion being grade point average (GPA). Depending on the particular grant you’re looking at, there may be more specific criteria.

In the US, for example, the Federal Government offers a variety of college financial aid grants. Federal Pell Grants, for example, target low- and middle-income undergraduate students. The Science and math Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant, on the other hand, is much more specific. These college financial aid grants are offered to third- and fourth-year undergraduate students majoring in physical, life or computer sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics or a foreign language that is critical to national security.

There are also a multitude of sources of privately funded financial aid grants. These can be financed by any number of institutions, including financial institutions, charities and even philanthropic individuals. In the same way as government-funded grants, private funders often stipulate conditions that applicants must meet in order to qualify for the grant. There is a great variety in the types of private grants. DAAD, for example, is a German Academic Exchange Service that awards grants to undergraduate and graduate students interested in studying in Germany.

If you are searching for college financial aid grants that might suit you, the internet is a good place to start looking. Your target college may also be able to give you some tips.
