College Success Made Possible

By: Justyn Hornor Home | Reference-and-Education

So you can't wait to get to college. Maybe you're looking forward to four years of freedom and fun. Or you're practical, and you want to go because you think a college degree will help you get a good job. Probably you're thinking a little of both. College can be fun, and it can help you in your future career, but if you're not careful, you can waste a lot of time and money in the process.

Planning ahead is the key to a successful college career. Before you choose a major, preferably before you even choose a college, you will want to find out what area of study fits you best. But how exactly can you do this? The answer is through an academic coach.

Why an Academic Coach?

An academic coach can be a great help in the process of discovering your strengths, abilities, and interests. Academic coaching involves taking an assessment test like the Highlands Ability Battery. You take the Highlands Ability Battery on CD Rom, and then get a detailed report of your abilities and a consultation with your academic coach. If you know what you are good at, you can choose a major that fits who you are. With academic coaching you are more likely to be on target when you choose a major. Then college will be a success because you will have the abilities you need to perform well in your core classes, which means you will also be more likely to enjoy them.

What's in it for Parents?

An academic coach also benefits parents. When a child has gone through academic coaching, parents have an insurance of sorts against wasted money. Instead of changing majors multiple times, which means more time and money spent on college, their son or daughter will have a good chance of finishing on schedule.

You could spend six or seven years working on a bachelor's degree, wandering through courses, changing majors three or four times, and end up with twice as much debt as you planned. Or you could avoid being a sixth-year senior by planning ahead and using an academic coach. Find out as soon as possible what you are interested in and where your strengths are, this will not only help you in college, it will also help you to eventually find a career you will enjoy and succeed in for life.
