Just one day after Big 12 powerhouse Nebraska decided to join the Big 10 Conference, the next domino has fallen in place as the Colorado Buffaloes have decided to jump ship from the Big 12, signing on with the Pac-10 conference, as phase one of the Pac-10s plans for expansion. The Pac-10 decided to key on making Colorado it’s first addition due to the Buffaloes holding the key to a huge TV market in Denver. The Pac-10, is far from done, expecting to have 2 more offers out on the table to teams perhaps as soon as tomorrow. Those teams are widely expected to be from the Big 12 as well. Colorado never really fit in the Big 12 anyways. The school was the only one that was located in the mountain west region of the United States. The culture of Colorado fits more in the landscape with the California’s of the world, than the Texas’. The Pac-10 is the right home for Colorado, and they pounced on the opportunity, sensing that they may end up on the outside looking in once Nebraska had jumped to the Big 10. While Colorado does not play baseball, which is huge for the Pac 10, they could now add a program. Colorado also will benefit to the tune of more money, which this is all about anyways, and not to mention, recruiting for the Buffaloes becomes much easier, as not only will they have first crack at any elite coming out of Colorado, but they will be more connected to the treasure chest that is California and their numerous great athletes. In the big picture, this has a lot more of an effect than just Colorado. Baylor also sensed the impending doom, and actually tried getting this spot in the Pac-10 conference, only to be denied. While the Pac-10 is looking to expand further, they are waiting to offer the big time schools such as Texas, and Oklahoma. The one potential saving grace for Baylor, is Texas A&M’s rumored interest in joining the SEC. However, if the Big 12 dissolves, which at this point, is looking like a mere formality, it seems more plausible that A&M would be more inclined to stay in the conference where their longtime rivals have been. Make no mistake about it, Texas A&M is going to have the choice, where as Baylor is going to have to hope they decline, and not to mention, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, and Iowa State are all going to be without a home, though it looks more likely that those schools could end up in the Big 10. The first hand was drawn with Nebraska yesterday. Colorado decided to make their call today, by pushing into the Pac-10. To continue the poker analogy, it looks like these moves are going to make Texas, Oklahoma, and the likes to have to go all in. The Big 12, unfortunately, is going to be left with no chips left, having to fold.
