Complementary And Alternative Treatments For Infertility

Nutrition and Supplementation

A well-balanced diet is important to fertility, but don't rule out psychological is sues. Stress often plays a major role in infertility. Avoid fats and food additives. The following substances inhibit fertility in both sexes: nicotine products, caffeine, alcohol, heavy metals (hair analysis can detect poisoning), and drugs (such as marijuana and cocaine). In some cases, a gluten-free diet has helped both men and women overcome their infertility. Also, ask your health care provider about deoxyhydroepiandosterone (DHEA) supplementation.

Intense exercise, hot tubs, and saunas have been known to impact ovulation and reduce sperm count. Although each person needs an individualized program, the following recommended daily nutritional supplement plan is a good place to begin:

selenium (200 to 400 mcg)-deficiency has been linked to infertility in men and women

vitamin C (2000 to 6000 mg in divided doses)-keeps sperm from clumping; increases motility

vitamin E (start with 200 IU and increase to 400 to 1000 IU)-balances hormone production; carries oxygen to the sex organs

zinc (80 mg, not to exceed a total of 100 mg from all supplements)-important for normal functioning of reproductive organs

liver extract (as prescribed by a healthcare provider)-promotes proper functioning of the sex organs

essential fatty acids (as directed on label)-vital for normal glandular activity, especially for the reproductive system

L-carnitine (for men, 3000 mg for four months)-increases sperm motility

soy isoflavones, including genestein (as directed on label)

uva ursi (as directed on label)-cleanses urinary tract

DHEA supplementation, as administered by your health care provider

(Consult your health care provider regarding the duration of treatment.)

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture In infertile men, acupuncture can be used to improve general circulation which can, in turn, enhance the mobility of sperm. Female infertility is sometimes caused by a hormonal disorder, and acupuncture can be used to increase the body's production of fertility-boosting hormones and to regulate the fertility cycle.

Points targeted to treat infertility in either gender are Spleen 6 and Liver 3. Kidney 7 is added to the male's routine, and Spleen 9 is added to the female's routine.

Chinese Herbal Therapy Herbs often prescribed in the treatment of female infertility include cnidium (a 3-gram capsule or decoction, 3 times a day) and leonurus (5- to 7.5-gram decoction 2 times a day)

Additional herbs used to treat male and female infertility are horny goat weed, cordyceps, schisandra, and Chinese raspberry. The patent medicine Dang Gui Four Combination is another common remedy. Once again, if desired results are not achieved, a better diagnosis of the individual's true imbalance is necessary.
