Computer Graphics Software In Public Schools - Creative Potential

Dip your paintbrush into a pallet of bits and bites. Computer graphics are more than bars and graphs; this has developed into its own form of art. The most common computer graphics programs in school are the ones children love to tinker with the most, computer drawing and art.
Students & Kids Love Computer Art
Lamar sat at his IBM clone during a break from the rigors of his senior-year chemistry class to "paint" a rudimentary self-portrait. It captured his attention for at least a half-an-hour. The skin was brown, the African American eyes looked almost Japanese, but he was satisfied with his new creation.
The most typical graphics programs used in school are low-end drawing and painting computer software, according to Flemming M. Larsen of Simon Fraser University in his doctorate thesis on the subject, "The Electronic Paintbrush: Computer Graphics and Art Education."
Hardware Platforms
The hardware platform in most grammar schools is Windows-based IBM clone computers. The graphic arts software typically in most classrooms is the most basic. Still, it succeeds in capturing the attention and helping to develop the imagination of students of all grade levels.
In many high schools, Macintosh hardware is used in conjunction with graphics instruction. Software choice will depend upon which hardware the school is using.
Clip Art
Downloadable images in the form of clip art are accessible by most students at most grade levels. In creating reports, school assignments and for personal use, clip art is one of the most common graphics mediums used by students. Students use, combine and manipulate clip art in their graphics presentations. Larsen notes that while the use of clip art may detract from personal creativity, students tend to take greater risks in their graphics choices using this medium. The availability and use of clip art is of value in helping students to make their presentations into something a little more memorable and to exercise their imagination.
A Visually-oriented Generation of Students
Studies show, that in today's highly-graphic climate, 80% of children are visually oriented. This has serious implications for educators who come from a previous generation where there might not have been as much emphasis on the visual. Students who have attentional issues, who might have symptoms of ADHD, who can't sit still in class and have a hard time concentrating, often benefit from the use of graphics in their school assignments.
Encouraging Use of Graphics and Art in Student's Assignments and Presentations
Teachers across different academic disciplines can encourage students to incorporate visually-appealing graphics into their assignments. This can help visually-oriented students to focus. Many children are mentally distracted by the intensity of video games. It is of importance and value to train students in using computer graphics in a positive way, apart from video games, and to use their visual and artistic skills to enhance their creative ability. Educators, then should encourage the use of computer art in their students reports and assignments. Familiarize them with the software that is provided with the classroom or library computer.
Creating computer art in the classroom is a popular way to fill in gaps of time with many students. Teachers can encourage the student's creative development positively through familiarizing students with software in the classroom for this purpose. Shifting children's interest in computers from video games to creating is of value and teaching student's to use the computers in school in a productive and positive way rather than from self-gratification is also of benefit in their educational and character development.
