Concrete Counter Tops For Unique Home Finishing

By: Karrie Rose Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Improvement

With the lack of construction contracts available these days due to the economic downturn, there are many home owners who are looking at upgrades and renovations for their homes. Some home owners are looking for ways to increase the value of their homes so that when the market recovers enough to sell, they have an appealing home to put on the market; other home owners are just renovating to make their home more appealing for themselves to live in.

Two of the biggest areas of renovation that you can add appeal and value to is in the kitchen and the bathroom; one of the easiest areas of these rooms that you can add some pizzazz with is the counter tops. More and more home owners are finding that an unusual alternative to the stone counters that have been so popular over the last decade is concrete.

Concrete has many benefits that make it an ideal choice for a counter top medium. The concrete can tinted in many different colors or have texture imbedded into it. Some concrete counters are created with a stone-like look, though many people like the grey mottled texture of plain concrete as well. The edges of concrete counters and supports can also be moulded to give them a cast plaster type of design, something more modern, or even a rough stone look.

Concrete can be cast into a myriad of shapes for counters, with and without built in sinks. Concrete sinks can be cast into a variety of shapes and sizes; draining areas can be cut into counters beside the sink area so the water drains back into the sink without the need for a dish rack, making the dish washing area sleek and clean looking.

Not only can parts be cut out of the concrete, but because it is a poured substance, items can also be imbedded into the material. One of the more popular imbedded items is steel rods inset into the concrete in parallel so that they form a trivet in the counter; this is especially useful beside a stove or oven where you are likely to want to put down hot items on a regular basis.

While the previous years have seen many homes turn to granite or composite types of counter tops, it is a pleasant change to see the beginning shift to an unusual medium in the bathroom and kitchen. With this type of material, home owners can easily make their living space unique and adapted to their living and decorating style.
