It used to be so simple †if you had a period house you furnished it with classic, traditional furniture such as Chesterfields and old wooden bookcases. On the other hand, if your home was modern you’d use contemporary furniture. But now that rule book has been torn up. Increasingly traditional homes, be they from the eighteenth century with all their Georgian charm or Victorian with those beautiful period details that almost everyone is looking for, are being filled with modern furniture. A striking glass and steel coffee table might go in a dining room which has moulded ceilings and shutters on the windows, for instance. Equally you might see modern, minimalist shelves and shelving units in a traditional eighteenth century drawing room with its panelled walls. The style has been called the â€hodge podge,†look by some interior designers and stylists. You can then confuse things and challenge the viewer again but mixing traditional antiques and old ornaments with modern furniture. On these bookcases, for instance, you could place a very traditional sculpture or on a striking contemporary plastic coffee table you could put an ancient artefact †this look would be particularly stunning. Some people are putting old leather bound books on modern bookshelves while others are placing tradition swagged and tasselled cushions on simply designed contemporary chairs and settees. The embroidery is all the most noticeable compared with the simplicity of the modern upholstery. You could do it the other way round †take a piece of modern sculpture and put it in a tradition book case, or put a modern painting on an oak panelled wall. Modern furniture could then be arranged around it to complete the look. In each case it’s the contrast that counts †in other words matching the old and the new to create a striking juxtaposition that will add something special to your home.
