According to the American Association of orthodontics occlusion is the direct relation between the upper (also known as maxillary) and lower (mandibular) teeth as they come together in order to serve their purpose, misaligned teeth will often cause problems which compromise the functionality of a person's bite. Occlusion problems not only will it affect the functionality of the bite but they will also change the appearance of the person's face, teeth misalignment will create the illusion that a person's face is rounder (often linked to obese persons) or they may also cause the effect of being extremely skinny when this is not the case. When a dentist examines a person is occlusion, he or she is immediately evaluating how the bite force of a person can compromise the teeth, the gum and even muscles and joints which allow the bite to remain functional. Some of the common symptoms that a person may suffer from what a malocclusion problem is precedent are: constant headaches, head and neck muscle pain, tooth wear, tooth sensitivity, jaw joint pain and even joint noises.
