When an advanced amount of upper eyelid skin is present, the skin may hang over the eyelashes and cause a loss of peripheral vision. The outer and upper parts of the visual field are most commonly affected and the condition may cause difficulty with activities such as driving or reading. Blepharoplasty is performed through external incisions made along the natural skin lines of the eyelids, such as the creases of the upper lids and below the lashes of the lower lids, or from the inside surface of the lower eyelid. The incisions may extend into the crow's feet or laugh lines at the outer corners of your eyes. Blepharoplasty surgery takes one to three hours, depending on the extent of the surgery. After surgery the eyes are lubricated with ointment and bandage may be applied. Pain medication to control the discomfort may also be prescribed by the surgeon. Some doctors even recommend eye drops to reduce eye dryness which is very common after surgery. For the first few weeks you may also experience excessive tearing, sensitivity to light, and temporary changes in your eyesight, such as blurring or double vision. Once the stitches are removed, the swelling and discoloration around your eyes will gradually subside. You start feeling much better.
