Cosmetic surgery has been increasingly popular over the past decade. In 2008 alone, there were 1.7 million cosmetic surgery procedures, and 10.4 million minimally invasive or injectable cosmetic treatments performed according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. For generations, and quite stereotypically, it has been felt that cosmetic surgery was reserved only for the wealthiest individuals. In fact, cosmetic surgery and cosmetic treatments performed by plastic surgeons are sought largely by the middle class; in 2008, more than 70% of all patients who underwent cosmetic surgery were women and men from the middle class. In 2008, 91% of all individuals who underwent cosmetic surgery treatments and procedures were women. Cosmetic surgery procedures cover a wide range of physical enhancements that will promote improvements in both appearance and self esteem. From cosmetic surgery of the face to cosmetic surgery of the breast to cosmetic surgery of the body, there is an array of procedures that a plastic surgeon has to offer to promote youth and beauty. Breast Augmentation: Breast enlargement with breast implants was the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure in 2008, with more than 300,000 performed. Since the re-introduction of silicone breast implants in November 2006, women now have the choice between saline breast implants and silicone breast implants for breast augmentation. Liposuction: Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes fat using thin cannulas through tiny inconspicuous incisions. It is extremely effective for those individuals who have localized fat deposits and who are otherwise in excellent health and fitness. This cosmetic surgery procedure is often performed with sedation anesthesia, although in selected cases, can be performed under local anesthesia. Eyelid Surgery: Blepharoplasty, or upper and lower eyelid lift, is an extremely popular cosmetic surgery procedure. It Removes excess, drooping skin, and removes or reduces bulging fat, promoting a more rested and youthful appearance. Incision lines are extremely inconspicuous with this cosmetic surgery, and downtime is often extremely short. Rhinoplasty: Rhinoplasty, or more charmingly known as a â€nose jobâ€, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is geared toward delicate refinements of the nose. Balance and proportion is always the goal as a prominent bump may be reduced, width may be narrowed, tips may be defined, and function is preserved or improved. Abdominoplasty: Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is the cosmetic surgery procedure that restores the firm abdominals and youthful midsection contour, most commonly following childbirth. When the tummy has been stretched by one or more pregnancy, no other cosmetic surgery procedure is as effective at restoring the muscle continuity and removing extra skin and fat. Liposuction is another cosmetic surgery technique that can be combined with abdominoplasty to further sculpt and refine a truly natural and beautiful contour. Facelift: The face lift is the gold standard cosmetic surgery procedure for facial rejuvenation. When performed properly, this cosmetic surgery restores the soft tissue contours of the face to a more youthful orientation, and gently redrapes the skin so it is taught, but never tight. Forehead Lift: The brow lift or forehead lift procedure is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can subtly and effectively rejuvenate the upper eyelid and lateral brow region. It is now most commonly performed as a minimal-incision or endoscopic cosmetic surgery procedure, with several small incisions in the hairline. Other Cosmetic Surgery: Many other cosmetic surgery procedures are available to satisfy the specific goals and desires of the individual. Breast lift (mastopexy), breast reduction, breast reduction in men (gynecomastia correction), buttock lift, cheek implants (malar augmentation), chin augmentation (mentoplasty), dermabrasion, ear surgery (otoplasty), hair transplantation, lip augmentation, lower body lift, thigh lift, and arm lift are all cosmetic surgery procedures that are popular, safe, and effective in the appropriately selected individuals. To determine which cosmetic surgery procedure is most appropriate for you, a comprehensive evaluation and discussion with your cosmetic surgeon is encouraged.
