Expanding foam insulation (also known as Polyurethane foam) is available in easy to use dispensers. This foam provides a professional way to fill small cavities, holes and joints. Expanding foam is highly durable and is ideal for many different construction projects including new builds, remodelling and basic repairs. How Does Expanding Foam Work? Polyurethane foam is injected into cans or tanks under intense pressure. You can use the can applicator or a special gun tool to apply the foam. When the foam is exposed to the air it will expand at a ratio of 8 to 1and fill up gaps and holes to create a strong insulating finish. Expanding foam is waterproof and also soundproof. This is an essential product for use in many different DIY tasks. Costs of Expanding Foam Expanding foam can vary in price and it is important to choose the product best suited to your project requirements. You can get expanding foams that provide different properties including waterproof sealants, cavity insulators and also breathable fillers. You can also get combination foams that have more than one purpose. If you are just filling small holes and gaps then you can use standard cans of expanding foam which are available from any good DIY store. However if you need to insulate large cavities then it can be more cost effective to get expanding foam tank insulation kits. These are available in a variety of sizes so you will need to measure your project very carefully to ensure you select the right volume of expanding foam. Preparation and Application Expanding foam will stick to anything it comes into contact with, so you will need to make sure you are wearing protective clothing including gloves and a hat. It will not wash off your skin so make sure you do not get it on your hands or face. Expanding foam also contains a number of chemicals which can cause inhalation irritation so you should also wear a ventilated mask when applying this product. Before you apply expanding foam you do need to make sure the surface areas are clean from dust, dirt, debris and oils. This will help to ensure expanding foam will adhere strongly to the surfaces. Oil in particular needs to be scrubbed clean as foam will not stick to this substance and will pull back as it dries, leaving an exposed area. This can negate any benefits from insulation that the expanding foam should be providing. Remove all of the furniture, carpets and furnishings from the room and cover the floor if you are doing a lot of foam insulation. Particles of foam will stick to most materials including fabric, wood and tiles and you will find it very difficult to get this off without ruining the surface.
