Who does not like jewellery? In fact, gems and jewels have always been said to be a girl’s best friend. Jewellery is actually a form of personal adornment. Jewellery can be of different forms. From necklaces to rings to earrings to brooches to bracelets to anklets, designer jewellery can be made into anything.
Jewellery can be made of anything. You can have jewellery made from precious gems or stones like ruby, emerald, diamond, etc, or can have jewellery made from precious metals like gold, silver, copper, bronze or can have jewellery made from cheaper materials like shells or beads. Whatever be the material used, jewellery is always liked by all.

The word jewellery has its roots in the old French word jouel which was Anglicized to jewel and then from it jewellery. In fact, jewellery is actually the oldest form of body adornment. Way back in the Old Stone Age people used to wear jewellery made from natural materials like animal teeth or bone or wood or shells or carved stones. Throughout the ages, different types of jewellery had undergone a lot of modifications, but the custom of wearing jewellery has not reduced or become extinct in any way.

Jewellery is often adorned for many different purposes. Jewellery can be said to be a symbol of one’s status. Even in ancient Rome, not everybody could wear the same type of jewellery. Who could wear what type of jewellery was based on the ranks. Although, this ranking system is no longer there, yet, jewellery as status symbol has not become void. Even today, the more jewellery of precious metal a person has more is his wealth and status.
Sometimes, some items of jewellery like the brooches or pins or buckles or clasps had their origin as purely functional items. But gradually, with the passage of time, these items lost their functional requirements and became fancy Designer Jewellery.

Jewellery was often worn like a symbolic representation of a particular group. Christians around the world wear the Crucifix which is the symbol of Jesus Christ. Members of secret societies also wear some sort of jewellery to distinguish themselves from others. Sometimes, married people wore a ring in their ring finger to show that they are married.

Some cultures have the tendency of wearing jewellery as a form of protective measure or for warding off evil. Amulets and devotional medals having different symbols engraved on them are often worn.
Jewellery has always been and will always remain as a form of artistic display. Nowâ€aâ€days, there is even the provision of Custom Made Jewellery. You can now go to any jewellery store and give the design of your choice and have the designer jewellery of your choice.

Jewellery made from precious metals is always liked by all. Modern jewellery is not made from only gold and silver. You can have your custom made jewellery made from white gold or platinum or titanium or palladium. With the growing price of gold, you now even have the option of making jewellery from an alloy of gold where the purity of gold is stated in terms karats.
