Cyprus Goes Dog Friendly

By: Coral Bay-7925 Home | Home-and-Family | Pets

Sandy beaches across the world are top destinations for families - holidaymakers flock to the surf and sand as a way to relax and unwind. It isn't often this way for pet owners. Cyprus is not a European State that is known for animal friendly beaches. It is the only state in Europe to actually ban all dogs at its beaches. Pet owners weren't even allowed to take their dogs on leashes to the beach. That was until the officials made an progressive decision.

Families who choose to bring the family pet with them on vacation have often found many beaches and beach-goers to be hostile towards their canine friends. Families now have options to bring the family dog with them.

It is no secret that dogs love the beach. The open sand and water offers pets space and freedom they may not otherwise experience. Dogs love the crashing waves and water. They enjoy exploring the surf and the unfamiliar terrain. Many play themselves into exhaustion where they lounge about the sand for a period of sunning.

Many dog owners forget the number of visitors who will be at the same beach. This can lead to many problems. Some beaches have banned dogs altogether. Some allow pets only if they're on leashes. There are a variety of reasons for this measure. Many include:

* Concerns that animals may not be current on shots

* The presence of beachgoers who simply do not like dogs

* Dogs may be aggressively friendly and disturb other guests

* Dogs may simply be overly protective of their family and can be aggressive to those simply walking on the beach

There are steps pet owners can take to ensure that their animals aren't subjected to the anger of others. The first measure is to locate a beach that is pet friendly. Many of these spots are listed online.

Cyprus is a noted vacation destination in Europe. Visitors from all over the world come to the island to enjoy luxury Cyprus hotels and plentiful nightlife. The beaches attract as many visitors as the popular clubs and restaurants. These gorgeous locales also attract excitement of a different kind: the hot button topic of dogs and public beaches.

Cyprus has a number of serious beachgoers. They do not want to be disturbed. There are even reports of physical fights breaking out over the presence of dogs on the beaches. One report actually has a beachgoer running over another visitor who brought a dog. Dogs are reported to have been poisoned on a few occasions.

The officials of Cyprus needed a new approach. Dogs are becoming more a "part of the family" and many owners are taking more on vacation every year. The surprising move by a popular resort was to allow a full beach that went beyond just allowing dogs. This beach is exclusively for animals.

Tourists and visitors to the 'party' town of Cyprus can let their pets relax and unwind in a spot of their own. Pet owners needn't fear the hostility of other beach goers any longer. The current 'animals only' beach is in a temporary location.

Cyprus officials are quick to point out that, while the current location will soon become an operational marina, the pet area will just be moved farther down the beach. This is a faucet of the island life that will remain to welcome future guests and their pets on holiday and full time residents alike.
