Dealing With A Cold Or Flu

By: Shawn Wilson Home |

Well it's that time of the year, kids are back at school and the seasons are changing. With this change usually brings a bevy of colds and flu's for all of us to deal with. I have historically been very lucky when it comes to getting sick in that I don't. We now have a 1 year old daughter and things have changed. While she doesn't go to school she does have cousins that do. The poor little gal has been dealing with a cold/flu for over 5 days and now her Daddy finally received it.

Over the last hundred years we have gone nuts will cold remedies and pills to fight fevers and have totally forgot that a fever is the body's natural way in dealing with sickness. In fact in the 1800's fevers were induced for their healing effects. What do we do today, as soon as a fever is present we pop some pills to get rid of it. Asprin was the first company to create this little pill and a host of others have followed claiming magical abilities when it comes to the common cold.

I do hate getting sick we all do but at the end of the day it's something that we have to deal with from time to time. I find the best way to deal with a cold is this amazingly complex and very scientific process. It's called sleeping as much as possible, drinking fluids and letting mother nature do the work. I can bet you that my colds last the same time and maybe even less than those that pop pills.

There is another segment in the market that goes after the alternative medicine crowd. If you get a cold you do one or all of these things. Pop vitamin C until you can't take it anymore, then you follow that up with a host of miracle natural pills claiming to get rid of your cold and flu in a matter of days. Funny that's how long it takes without these pills.

The truth is all of these pills in my opinion are nothing more than placebos. While I realize some of the ingredients might actually have some healing powers I believe this is the mind wanting to get rid of the cold more than anything. We often forget how powerful our brain is and wanting to be healthy and not sick can often be all that you need.

I think we all can admit of a time when we had an event or work project and mysteriously became ill just days before. Our mind works in both directions and really does what our subconscious is asking it. We all have our own way of dealing with a cold and any placebo that works don't stop and think positive when you get sick and the darn cold might go away.

I am not a Doctor by any means but please as long as you or your child's fever isn't above 104 degrees fahrenheit leave it. This really is our body's best way of burning out those nasty cold and flu germs!
