Deciding On Colours In Designing Websites

By: Ms Karra Maxim Home | Internet-and-Business | Web-Design

One facet of a well designed website is its colour scheme. Colour selection is vital in creating the look that the website's owner wants to portray. If the look of the website doesn't meet the user's expectation, then they'll leave & probably won't return to the website. This is frequently the reason why a site is not doing as well as it should be.

Knowing more about colour perception can make life a whole lot easier when picking a colour scheme for a website. Knowing which colours can irritate & those that can calm is important in giving the user the right impression & experience of the website. After all, why would you want to anger a user when you want them to buy from your site?

Colour contrast & balance is another good technique. It can be used to direct users to desired pages of areas within the website. Ecommerce sites could be made much better if they could point the user in the direction of the purchase now button by drawing attention to it and creating contrast using colour.

Below is a list of some of the best-known colours & their emotional connotations.

Blue can symbolise depth, professionalism, trust & honour. Dark blue is used by many corporate businesses although this colour can also be construed as cold.

Black is about power, elegance, evil & mourning. Rock bands regularly use black backgrounds due to its association with the dark side & anger.

Green represents nature, environment, peace & luck. Green is a good colour to use to create a calming effect.

Standing for joy, happiness, warning & energy, yellow has a similar effect to red, although it's not as popular. It can be used to emphasise areas of a site. However, if it's used too much, it can be overpowering.

Purple is linked with royalty, indulgence and luxury. It's not a widely used colour in designing for the World Wide Web, probably because it is known as a feminine colour.

Creating a feeling of earthiness, mother earth and poverty, brown is very similar to green as it can be used to give a relaxed feeling to a site.

Grey can be linked to elegance, innovation & the future. The lighter side is similar to white because it is a fabulous colour to use on the background of a website to conceive a sense of space & modernism.

Knowing what various colours symbolise and the subconscious power of them can be a great benefit when designing websites. By knowing the target audience, web designers can thoughtfully choose colours that connect to the user thus making the site more appealing and attractive to them.
