There are 2 classes of wrist pain. The first class of Los Angeles wrist pain occurs immediately, such as with an injury like a broken bone. The second class occurs over a period of time, for example, arthritis or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Los Angeles Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common cause of chronic pain in the hand and wrist. CTS occurs when too much pressure builds up within the carpal tunnel located in the middle of the palm side of the wrist. Since this space is very small, and connects to several nerves and tendons, pressure on the median nerve, the major nerve in the wrist, which is usually caused by repetitive and overuse of the hands, causes pain in the wrists and palms, numbness and tingling sensations in the hands and fingers, and weakness of grip. People affected by median nerve pressure at the wrist will also describe painful or electric shock-like sensation radiating into the hand or back up the forearm. According to Los Angeles hand surgeon, Dr. Sean Younai of the California Hand Center, repetitive use of the hands like typing, working on a production line, writing, and driving, all can cause the telltale symptoms of CTS. Dr. Younai says that while these symptoms may seem more annoying than threatening, if not treated, carpal tunnel syndrome can cause permanent nerve damage to the hand and loss of hand function. A spectrum of treatments is available for carpal tunnel syndrome. These include splinting, oral anti-inflammatory medications, ergonomic work and activity changes, and therapy. If these modalities don’t work, steroid injections and surgical decompression are available. At California Hand Center, all these methods are employed. But when conservative measures aren’t adequate, a minimally-invasive straight-forward surgical decompression provides the cure. This Los Angeles hand surgery procedure can be done under regional anesthesia (just the arm is â€asleep†for the surgery), in a day surgery setting.
