Low carb, low calorie, South Beach, in the zone, and now Detox Diets. What exactly is a detox diet and will it help you lose weight fast? The term detox is short for detoxification. In today's fast paced world many of us eat out, eat prepared foods, fast foods, and chemically processed foods. If you look a the label of most frozen entrees for example you'll see the names of many substances that are difficult to pronounce and are in the food as a preservative, coloring or artificial flavoring. Many of these substances build up in our bodies. Transfat is probably one of the better known artificial food additives. It is a completely manmade fat and was touted at its introduction as healthier than the fats it replaced such as butter, and natural oils. It turns out transfat is not only not healthier but it can be toxic and has been removed from most - but not all - foods. Toxins from chemicals, pesticides, foods, and pollution tend to build up in the fat cells of the body interfering with normal bodily functions. A detox diet is a short term program which assists the body in getting rid of toxins through the digestive system. The program includes eliminating many foods, caffeine and alcohol, while increasing the consumption of fiber, healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, and water. There can be side effects from a detox diet including headache, especially if the person was a heavy coffee drinker, nausea, and stomach cramps. It's important that a higher level of water be consumed to help the released toxins flush out of the body. A detox diet shouldn't be undertaken by those with liver problems because eliminating toxins can put a greater strain on the liver, those with diabetes or who are prediabetic, or pregnant women. Even if you don't have any of these conditions it's always a good idea to talk with your doctor before starting any diet. Will a detox diet help you lose weight quickly Toxins may interfere with the digestive system, insulin production, and hormone production therefore making it more difficult to lose weight. In any event a detox diet that is primarily raw fruits, vegetables, juices and water can lead to a short term weight loss that could be just the boost needed to kick off your weight loss program. Should you stay on such a restricted diet for the long term? No, a strictly fruit and vegetable diet is missing in critical nutrients, such as proteins and fats, that are vital for good health. On the other hand if your diet is well balanced there's no reason it can't be a lifetime program.
