Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a set of related disease in which the body cannot regulate the amount of sugar (specifically, glucose) in the blood.

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels that result from defects in insulin secretion, or action, or both.

Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes (as it will be in this article) was first identified as a disease associated with "sweet urine," and excessive power loss in the ancient world.
Elevated levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia) lead to spillage of glucose into the urine, hence the term sweet urine.

Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is classed as a metabolism disorder. Metabolism refers to the way our bodies use digested food for energy and development.

Most of what we eat is broken down into glucose. Glucose is a form of sugar in the blood - it is the most important source of fuel for our bodies.

When our food is digested the glucose makes its way into our bloodstream. Our cells use the glucose for energy and growth. However, glucose cannot enter our cells without insulin being present - insulin makes it probable for our cells to take in the glucose.

According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 21 million nation in the United States have diabetes, with about 90 to 95% have type 2 diabetes.

Sugar, in the form of glucose, is the main source of fuel for body cells. The hormone insulin allows glucose in blood to enter cells.
In type 2 diabetes, either the body doesn't produce enough insulin or cells are resistant to effects of insulin.
