Digital Photography Basics For Taking Great Digital Pictures

By: Darren Flanagan Home | Travel-and-Leisure

You cant get great digital photographs five minutes after buying a new digital camera. Alot of people think that digital photography is easy but if it was then everyone would be doing it. But by knowing and remembering a few digital photography basics then you can get the great pictures that want.

Most people who are not accustomed to the art of digital photography will tell you that the camera is the most important thing. The more mega pixels that the camera has the better, the more expensive the camera the better or even the longer the zoom the better. The camera doesn't decide the viewpoint, the setting, the subject or even the mode in which you set the camera. Now, I will tell you about some digital photography basics that will help when taking pictures and will hopefully help you get the pictures that you want.

1. Get to know your camera

What most people will do when they buy a new digital camera is get home, open the box, flick through the manual and take a quick picture of the dining room table. Then they will look at it on the cameras new LCD screen and that's it, the camera now works. They will then proceed to take all their pictures in auto mode and with the same flash setting for as long as they are let. If you are going to buy a digital camera and spend the money on it then you really should spend the time and find out how it works. If you know about the different settings and modes or how to control the exposure in the camera then you can make a big differance to you pictures.

2. Control the flash

You should not always rely on the automatic flash to do the work for you. Depending on the shot or situation you are in, you can decide to turn on or off the flash. It's very important to control the flash yourself as when used in the wrong situation the flash can cause glare or red-eye in pictures.

3. Hold the camera straight

This might seem like a simple thing to do but you would be surprised how many people get this wrong. Hold your camera level and steady when taking a picture this is very important. You can look at the LCD on the camera to find another horizontal line within the frame, which you can use to line up your shot. If you're taking a picture of your daughter then use a tree or window frame in the background to make sure your holding the camera level.

By taking these very simple digital photography basics on board i hope they can in someway help you to achieving the great shots that you wanted. Remember anyone can take a great picture but it comes down to the person and not the camera.
