Discover More About Designing Websites & Colour Psychology

By: Ms Karra Maxim Home | Internet-and-Business | Web-Design

Introduction

One clear sign of a well designed website is its colour scheme. Colour selection is vital in creating the look that the website's owner wants to portray. If the look of the website does not meet the users expectations, then they'll leave & probably won't return to the site. In fact, they might even go and visit one of your competitor’s instead. This is regularly the reason why a web site isn't as successful as it should be.

Being aware of colour perception can make your life a lot easier when deciding on a colour scheme for a website. Knowing which colours can irritate & that can calm is vital in giving the user the right impression & experience of the website.

Colour contrast & balance is another technique you should know about. It can be used to direct users to desired pages of areas within the website. This is particularly effective in ecommerce websites.

Some Colours and their Meanings

Below are some of the best-known colours & their emotional connotations.

The colour black is about power, style, evil and mourning. Rock bands often use backgrounds that are black because of its association with the dark side and anger.

Blue can mean depth, professionalism, trust and honour. Dark blue is used by many corporate businesses although this colour can also be seen as cold.

The colour yellow can symbolise riches, joy optimism and energy. Using yellow in designing websites is a exciting way to make components stand out from the rest of the site.

The colour red is a very evocative colour and it conjures up images of hell, love, fire and warning. It’s probably the most effective colour that you can use to draw attention to your site.

White could create contrast by being used as a background colour. The areas of white in between components of a web page are referred to as negative space. White is linked to cleanliness, peace and light.

Orange is a colour that is linked with vibrancy, heat, fire & energy. A therapeutic colour, it can be used in designing web sites to signify openness.

Purple is not an extremely popular colour in designing websites, because it’s seen as pretty girly & can give the impression of arrogance, riches, luxury & indulgence. Darker shades of purple can be really deep & luscious.
In Conclusion

The psychology of colour can play a big role in making a successful site. To create a subliminal expectation amongst the user can be an effective sales tool. Selecting colours thoughtlessly can accidentally put users off the web site. Creating colour combinations that guide users to an end goal can generate lots of sales and make the whole user experience stress free.
