Diy Saves: Soundproofing With Sound Damping Glue

By: Valerie Jenkins Home | Home-and-Family

Quiet" is no longer a luxury. In fact, it has become a standard practice in building construction today. Noise is one of the most common litigation issues in multi-family residences. Don't fight with your neighbors! If you are considering soundproofing the shared wall in your condo, bedroom, garage or even media room consider a sound damping glue. Sound damping glue offers high acoustic performance and will save you time with easier, more reliable installation than traditional methods like resilient channel and soundboard. Best of all, it saves you money!

Reliable performance . . .

Other noise control methods such as resilient channel (RC) and soundboard should be installed directly onto the studs for proper acoustic performance. Sound damping glue can be installed either over existing construction or as a new assembly. RC carries high risk of failure in the field because it depends upon fully decoupling the wall from the studs. Small errors in initial construction or subsequent modifications can short-circuit the entire system. For example, hanging a picture frame on the RC wall and allowing the nail to penetrate to the stud, will compromise the acoustic performance of the entire assembly. Because the technology behind sound damping glue is damping and not decoupling (as with RC/sound board), your wall is much more likely to achieve the expected performance, as it is not affected by the nails or screws.

Sound damping glue uses constrained-layer damping technology that has been proven to achieve reliable acoustic performance. Damping technology uses a viscoelastic layer (the glue) to convert acoustic energy (sound) into thermal energy (heat), preventing the majority of the sound from passing through the wall. Sound Transmission Class, or STC, it is a measurement of transmission loss through a wall or partition. The higher the STC the better. Ideally, shared walls should be in around STC 55 for comfortable living. Serious Materials' soundproofing glue, for example, is tested and proven to achieve an STC rating of 54 in standard construction. Soundboard on the other hand achieves an STC 45 on the same wall frame. RC has been lab tested at STC 55, but with a 90% failure rate performance is not promising. Because of its simple installation with low risk of field failure, sound damping glue consistently delivers higher performance over the more traditional soundproofing methods. It is reliable, saves time and is easy to use, ideal for DIY applications.

. . . At a better price

Although soundboard may not be as labor intensive as RC, it is much more expensive for lower performance. On the other hand, sound damping glue will save you both time and money. Depending on the brand, soundboard may cost you about $0.75 per square foot. This is more expensive then sound damping glue and does not provide even close to equivalent performance. Soundproofing glue costs only about $0.60 per square foot and offers you higher acoustic performance. The decision is easy; sound damping glue is better and saves you money!

Sound damping glue offers "do-it-yourselfers" the opportunity to build a reliably comfortable and quiet living space with the lowest material cost. Enjoy chatting, reading a book, or sleeping without any distractions. Listen to music, watch a movie, or have friends over, without disturbing your neighbors.
