Do Love Marriages Score More Over Arranged Marriages?

By: Home | News-and-Society | Marriage

This is among the extensively raised questions whenever there is a debate going on the popularity and relevance of two types of marriages †Love Marriage and Arranged Marriage. Having discussed and answered end number of times, this question remains unanswered most of the times. The key reason lies in the varying perceptions of people on this subject.

In India, matrimony is one of the most sacred rituals and thus upholds great relevance among Indian populace. Arranged weddings consequently enjoy a clear edge over the love ones as most parents think that only they are competent in finding out the most suitable match for their beloved sons or daughters.

Though with the passage of time, many parents have accepted the concept of love marriage and have even started giving the full liberty to their children for choosing the most suitable life partner, love marriages still have a long way to go. Love marriages are still not accepted with open arms in most of the small cities and towns. However, lots of youngsters are happily giving preference to love matrimonies these days.

The extrovert and enthusiastic youth of today’s India are mature and independent enough to finalize such major decisions of their lives. Besides, they think that they have full right to choose the person with whom they are going to live for the rest of their life.

In addition, Media and Education have contributed immensely in popularizing the conception of love matrimony in India. With the introduction of the British education system in India, more and more Indians became more knowledgeable. Movies also influenced the mindset of masses as well as the classes to a large extent. The approach to love and marriage as portrayed in the movies stimulated Indian viewers to the extent that now love marriages are not treated as a taboo. People do not think that they need to adhere to matrimonial traditions and thus can choose their own life partners. And for doing so, they don’t have to rely on parents, matchmakers, relatives, astrologers, and so on. These changes in approach and opinions have spurred the number of love marriages in India.

At present, both love and arranged matrimonies are taking place in the country. As far as love marriages are concerned, they proffer much needed time for mutual understanding to a couple that is perceptibly required for the success of any relationship. This way, people can easily make adjustments when they are finally taking their nuptials vows.

Contrarily in an arranged marriage, there is a lot of pressure on couples to meet parental expectations like producing a male heir, taking active participation in family rituals, developing great rapport with sisters-in-laws, contributing to family expenses, and so on.

Similarly, lovers have to make great efforts if their parents don’t agree with their relationships. Besides, sometimes discords even arise between couples having love marriages. It has come to the fore that after spending a long quality time together post love marriage, many couples are found to be repenting on their decisions. They find it hard to keep up the nuptial and at last break the bond to get free. That is why it is aptly said that love marriage is not a cakewalk!

Perhaps to stay away from such a situation, these days many youngsters prefer to have arranged matrimonies. The best aspect about the arranged marriage is that both parents and family are happy and thus they themselves arrange the matrimony with glee. No tears and sacrifices are required for getting parents’ permission in this case.

However, it is still very difficult to affirm which type of nuptial is better and scores more over the other. Whether it is a love or arranged wedding, it should be based on love, empathy, responsibility, concern, and commitment. It calls for a lot of dedication and efforts to carry on the relation. And to support and live happily with each other, it needs dedication, patience, perseverance, and obviously affection and care. If one is able to adhere to all these fundamentals, it is undeniably an ideal wedding.

Love is a vital element, whether it develops before or after the marriage is not imperative. It should happen and then bliss will subsequently follow. This is the secret for a successful marriage.
