Don't Make A New Years Resolution

By: Dawn Damico Home | Self-Improvement

At some point in life, you will start off a new year with a resolution. Maybe your goal is to lose weight, quit smoking, get rich, live larger, love better, or get a better job. These are all great goals; however do NOT fall into the trap of committing to a popular New Years resolution. That is, not until you have faced your limiting beliefs.

Every time you try to accomplish something, and fail, you only reinforce a false belief that you cannot do it. The first thing you need to do is work on those limiting beliefs that are holding you back. Just like taking the time to patch a wall before you paint it, your results for a New Years goal will be easier reached when you first work on the foundation of your values and beliefs.

Many limiting beliefs are formed in our early childhood. Most likely the people who loved us most were the very people that contributed to our network of limiting beliefs that are holding us back from success. They are not evil people; they were simply passing on their own limiting belief system of which they probably were not really aware.

How many of us sat at the kitchen table at dinner and were scolded for not finishing the meal because some kid in a faraway place would just love to eat what we didn't. We were conditioned to believe that we were selfish if we didn't finish the meal laid out before us.

In our youth, we may have believed that we could climb the tallest tree but a cautious adult told us that we couldn't. And, when we dared to climb that tree but fell and broke our arm, we were scolded. Once again, that limiting belief was reinforced and we were told what we couldn't do. If we tried to do something that we hadn't done before, we would most likely be hurt, just like we were. So, from that point forward we never again dared to climb a treeā€to reach a little beyond what was safe.

Little events like this accumulate and help to form our values and beliefs. As adults, we first need to realize what our limiting beliefs are and then take the steps to reverse any negative belief system so that we can move forward. Once we are able to do this we can successfully reach beyond our comfort zone, reach beyond that safety net, and achieve things that we never before believed were possible.

So in this year, it could benefit you greatly in reaching your own New Years goals to allow for a paradigm shift in your life.
