Drum Sets: How To Buy

By: Salina Dane Home |

If you have a child that wanting to learn how to play drums, you will probably need to shop around for a drum set. Many young students and older adults love the idea of owning drums and dream of knowing how to play them. Before you look around for drum sets you need to remember several things before you buy.

Well, most drum sets contain a couple of tom toms, a snare and a bass drum. Cymbals are not usually included in the set but can always be purchased individually at another time, as you will probably will not need them in the beginning anyway. When you start learning, begin with the drums and gradually buy the cymbals later.

If you buy a cymbal kit, you will get about three cymbals of different sizes, such as 14, 16, and 20 inch cymbals to start with. It may be better that you buy them individually rather than in a set, and that you visit a reputable music store rather than buy them online. Once the drummer improves drumming basics and progresses, better cymbals can be purchased.

To purchase your cymbals, find a reputable cymbal manufacturer such Paiste, Sabian, and Zildjian. You'll also need the hardware for the drum set, and keep in mind that some drum sets include the hardware but some cases you'll have to buy hardware separately. This is the "frame" of the drum set, meaning the stands, pedals and drum seat.

Again, if you're just purchasing a set for your child, and you're not sure he or she is going to stick with it as a hobby, you can go a little cheaper. Compare prices from music stores to online stores, and check out the guarantees and refund policies. If you want to make sure what you get is truly good quality that's going to last you can choose sturdier equipment.

The drum seat is specially constructed so as to absorb the impact of the drumming and support you or your child properly as you drum. Using a kitchen chair or some other type of seat isn't going to do the job right. Invest in a proper drum seat, even if it's used, so as to make sure you're both comfortable and safe when you drum.

Some parents do not want to make a big investment on a brand new drum set because they are not sure if their child is going to stay interested. If you look carefully, drum sets can be found on the Internet such as online shops or eBay, or even classified ads in the daily newspaper. Once you do some research, you will be able to find what you need.

If you are unsure about investing in a new drum set, a good solution would be to buy a refurbished or used drum set. You can find these at a reasonable price if you decide to spend the time searching. For example, check out classified ads in your newspaper, search online on auction websites, or check with other parents of students in your child's school as someone may give you an unexpected lead.
