Dusseldorf was never one of Germanys larger cities. It is mostly known for its many places of entertainment. The Alstadt area pulsates with activity both day and night. It is compact and easily accessible more so in its heaving gay nightlife. Most of the gay activity is happening in between Oststrabe and Karlstrabe just a stones throw away from the Hauptbahnhof train station. In summer when its even more crowded than usual, virtually every bar and restaurant offers the opportunity of eating and having fun. The legendary Old Town is a place not to be missed with its alleys, squares and the Rhine promenade ,with its many cafes and beer gardens transform into one large open air terrace, especially in the summer. Media Harbour is a successful example of modern city development and impresses with the imaginative architecture and the countless restaurants and bars. The Rheinturm with its breathtaking view of the city is an ideal starting point for trip around the harbour. Celebrations are great at the time of the carnival, when hundreds of thousands of people crowd the city. But even the regular events like the largest fair along the Rhine, the Japan Day, the Jazz Rally or the Christmas markets attract visitors from within Germany and from abroad every year. Dusseldorf is the bustling Rhine metropolis right in the heart of Europe and has its residents and visitors a lot to offer. Essentially Dusseldorf was transformed in the 19th century into a city of parks, ponds and canals. Accommodation is best booked in advance. Dusseldorf is a busy city, there are many international air routes and carriers offering different options on flights. They tend to be quite competitive on price although it is always advisable to book early. Dusseldorf International Airport, also referred to as Rhein Ruhr Airport, is located eight kilometres from the city centre and can easily be reached by train or the S Bahn urban railway. There is a long distance train station served by regional and national services, which is linked to the airport by the Sky Train. A person travelling throughout Germany should make it a point to visit the city of Dusseldorf. Located just north of Cologne, Dusseldorf offers travellers a unique blend of history and culture with a modern twist.
