East Germany Hostels

A Backpackers’ Guide to Hostels in East Germany

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, East Germany has been embraced by a vast wealth of cultures and groups that had previously been unable to get to it.

But in the same way that the social status of cities such as Berlin and Leipzig very quickly caught up with the rest of the country, its tourism industry is also thriving, offering cheap attractions as well as budget hostels.

Heart of Gold Hostel Berlin
This jovial budget accommodation takes its inspiration from the Douglas Adams book 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy', and is one of the most centrally located hostels in Berlin with a host of useful amenities.

Most importantly, it's within walking distance to the city's nightlife and famous cultural attractions including the Brandenburg Gate, the evocative ruins of the Berlin Wall and the impressive Reichstag building.

Travelers will have their pick of clubs, bars and restaurants along the Oranienburger Strasse and the Hackescher Markt. But for those attending Berlin's famous events, such as the Berlin film and Oberbaumbrucke festivals, there's little better place from which to navigate.

Sunflower Hostel
One of the more vibrant youthful locations in Berlin, the Sunflower Hostel is conveniently located in the center of the Friedrichshein district, with plenty of laidback bars and cafs on offer.

The hostel itself offers parking for those touring by car, while a games room provides a chance to socialize with some fellow travelers and pick their brains about the best local bars.

Attractions in the immediately accessible area include the Topography of Terror Museum, formerly the offices in which top members of the Nazi party made some of their most high-profile and controversial administrative decisions.

For a more light-hearted experience, however, the Landwehrkanal running through the center of the district is a hive of social activity in the summer, epitomizing the decidedly hip attitude of the local residents.

Central Globetrotter Hostel Leipzig
Away from Berlin, the Saxon city of Leipzig offers travelers quite a different experience of East Germany, and there is little better way to explore the attractive Old Town and New Town than from the enclaves of the Central Globetrotter Hostel.

Minutes from the impressive main station this comfortable accommodation adopts a back-to-basics approach while managing to outdo other Leipzig hostels with WiFi access and late breakfast buffet.

Visitors can explore the final resting place and life of the famous composer Bach at the famous Bach museum, or stroll around the 16th century Old Town. For the seasonal visitor, the Christmas market is an Old Town treat not to be missed.
