Efficient Water Removal For Your Flooded Home

By: Chris Blastoyout Home |

Water removal is the first thing that people have to deal with after a flood. A family won't even be able to begin cleaning their home and getting on with their lives when their floors and furniture are still under water. There are plenty of companies that offer these services. These companies have the right equipment and protective gears to do the job. They can do the work much faster than if you do it on your own. Still if you prefer to do the water removal of your home on your own, here are some tips you can follow:

Before you proceed with any work, turn off the main electrical switch to your home. This will ensure that you can safely work on the water removal of your hone without getting electrocuted. Next, check the inside and outside of your home for possible cracks and damages to the structure. You wouldn't want your home crumbling on you as you suck the water out. This is especially important for flooded basements.

When you are ready to start the water removal process, purchase or rent the needed equipment for pumping the flood out of your home. You can visit the nearest hardware store to purchase a sump pump or a wet vacuum to help you in the water removal of your flooded home. You will need a generator to run the equipment or you can purchase a pump and a vacuum that runs on gasoline.

Some people who experience frequent flooding already have sump pumps installed in their homes. If you do not have a pump and do not wish to purchase a new one, there are companies that offer sump pumps and water vacuums for rent. Remember to pump no more than three feet of water out each day. You shouldn't do total water removal in one go because there might be flood or water pressure from outside your home that is pushing your walls. The flood water inside may be balancing the water pressure from outside preventing your walls from crumbling in.

After each day of pumping out a few feet of water, use a tape to mark the new water level on the wall. This marking on the wall will help you check if water is still sipping into your basement or your home.

Clear all the debris, soil, and trash out of your home once you have performed complete water removal. Use a shovel to clear out the mud and other debris that has been brought into your home by the flood. Make sure you are wearing sufficient protective gear such as gloves and rubber boots.

Hose down and give all hard surfaces a good scrubbing. Disinfect all surfaces that were exposed to flood water. After getting your home completely clean, you should get the air circulating. Use your home's air conditioner or your home heater to help in the drying process. When using the heating system, make sure you also have the dehumidifier on. If you do not have a dehumidifier, simply leave your windows open to ventilate your home. Water removal can be tasking but also very doable.
