Egg And Sperm Donation - Options For The Childless

By: Co-Parents.net Home | Home-and-Family

Researchers estimate that there are about 10 percent of couples on earth who are infertile and can't have children on their own. This infertility problem could be found in women as well as men. The best process to overcome this deficiency is to go through the procedure known as test tube baby.

The process for fulfilling the dream of becoming a parent can be done through the following two ways; - these are Egg donation and Sperm donation.

Egg donation is the process by which a woman offers several eggs for the purpose of reproduction. The process is a biological reproductive technology that helps infertile women to conceive and get pregnant. The donation process involves removal of a number of healthy and mature eggs from the donor's ovaries. Once these eggs are removed, they are immediately prepared for freezing or for use in fertility procedures. After the eggs have been donated, the role of the donor is completed.

Next, the partner’s role comes into play. Eggs are taken to a laboratory and placed inside of a petrie dish. The sperm provided by the partner is placed inside that dish for fertilization. The embryos formed are cultured for three days, until they can be implanted. This process of fertilization is called in vitro fertilization (ivf egg donation).

The second process is Sperm Donation which is as follows:-

Sperm donation is the collection of sperm from the sperm donor. Unlike the egg donors, the majority of sperm donors are anonymous. The donated sperm is retrieved through the masturbation process. After retrieval, the donated sperm is first tested and examined for infectious diseases before it is used in the fertility process.

The sperm are frozen and quarantined for a period of six months prior to use, as to avoid any possible chances of infecting the mother or the child. It is usually frozen in plastic or glass tubes. To increase the chances of conceiving, the fast moving sperm are separated from more sluggish or non-moving sperm. This is done through a process known as Intrauterine Insemination (IUI). The fast moving sperm are then placed into the woman’s womb when the egg is released from the ovary in the middle of the monthly cycle. The treatment needs to be timed according to your menstrual cycle.

These two ways can help a childless person experience the joy of having a child and also fulfilling their dreams of parenting a baby.
