Eliminating Upper Back Muscle Pain

By: Home | Health-and-Fitness

The lower back is almost always associated with back pain. And in fact is one of the side effects a nerve condition called sciatica. However, upper back muscle pain can be just as chronic as the lower back, however, it is not as common. Of course one of the culprits for left upper back muscle pain and right upper back muscle pain is arthritis. Poor posture is one of the causes associated more with upper back pain, as is a stationary job where you sit in one position all day without taking a break and moving around. Upper back muscle pain is usually associated with the area between the shoulder blades and the general neck area. There are many ways that you can reduce or eliminate upper back pain.

Studies have concluded that ten percent of all American have back pain at one time or another. That figures out to millions of people suffering from back pain every year. And doesn't take into account the other countless number that have to undergo painful surgery to get rid of acute upper back muscle pain.

Upper back pain and weakness is usually a symptom of a lack of motion. This is usually associated with a general lack of exercise. When you are sedentary, you are not giving your back the necessary exercises in order to strengthen it. Another cause of upper back pain is injury that is caused by either accident or illness. No matter what the cause of your upper back pain, there are many different ways in which to treat it. Many of the treatment options can be done at home or at a chiropractic office, however, there are a few that can only be performed by a physician or therapist.

Home remedies are the first course of treatment in cases where the problems and associated pains are not severe in nature. If these fail to lead to a timely cure and only if they fail to relieve back pain will the patient see a doctor for exposure to some of the more popular cures. Of course if your condition worsens because of these treatments then you should immediately consult a doctor qualified in this field of practice. Some of the symptoms associated with a worsening condition would include but not limited to: numbness or a generally numb condition in the upper back, a burning sensation in the upper back and in the upper cervical disc area and for that matter any increased pain along the spine.

Home remedies include the use of ice on upper back pain. When it is applied every three or four hours, it offers effective relief from pain. This method should be used for two days and then heat should be applied to the area that is affected with pain. It is recommended that a person who suffers from upper back pain take a pain reliever such as Motrin or Naproxen because of the anti- inflammatory properties that they contain. There are also creams and ointments that can be purchased over the counter at any pharmacy.

There may be times when the home remedies are not effective and you will need to seek medical assistance. A physician will be able to diagnose your upper back pain and prescribe a medication that will be effective in eliminating it all together. He or she may even recommend physical therapy to aid in the healing process. This type of treatment will also help strengthen your back to reduce the chance of re-occurrence. Your physician may even recommend that you consult a chiropractor as an alternative method of treatment.

Upper back pain can be very frustrating to deal with. However, there are treatment methods that are fast and effective in treating the pain. Whether you are seeking home remedies or professional treatment, you will find either method to be effective in eliminating the pain.
